Do football (soccer) scouts watch Sunday league players?

Yes, some scouts attend Sunday football leagues for their #1 place to recruit football talent. Do Scouts regular and occasionally attend a variety of Sunday football leagues? Yes, in reality, a local club scout may be coaching in the Sunday football league.

What Scouts look for when watching Sunday League Players?

Pace

The Pace is a term that is often used on and around the pitch. Yes, the pace is speed, but it is much more than that. The pace is rhythm, control, and tempo with how you move and play football. It is one thing to be fast, like a 100-meter sprinter. But if you give that 100 sprinters the ball and he is only 20% of himself, then his pace is useless. Versus another player that does not have 100-meter sprint speed yet they can play with and without the ball at 85% of there 100% max sprint speed.

The goal here is to improve your speed without the ball while also gaining tempo or rather pace with the ball.

So when scouts are looking at players that are looking for players that have natural speed but also great pace or in-game football speed. If you are able to show pace, you will be giving the scouts one skill that they love.

Ball Skill

Football scouts are looking for players with football skills. This is often ambiguous as we need to dive into this at a nuanced level. Ball skill is not just the ability to dribble well but also the ability to hold onto the ball and not lose critical offensive moves. Players like Messi and Pele have tremendous ball skills, but they also control the ball well without making a lot of mistakes. Zidane was a master at this too. Often times, players on the pitch that have great dribbling skill can overuse this skill and lose critical offensive chances do to overaggressiveness. Scouts are looking for ball skills in combination with offensive schemes.

Teamwork

This is a huge intangible as you want players that always make the unselfish play because scoring on the pitch is so difficult, and you must make the right play at play at the elite level. You may only get one or two opportunities to score a game and maybe none at all in world cup play, so footballers must always be team focused.

Football IQ

Understanding of the game is the key to maximizing talent and creating champions world chip-level teams. You must always and mean always improve your football IQ; This must show up on the pitch as not blowing defensive assignments or missing offensive scoring opportunities on the pitch because of a lack of understanding of positioning and pace.

Professionalism

Football is a big-time business, and players must at all times act in a professional manner. Scouts will look to see how you handle success, failure, and unexpected challenges.
